The Portuguese superstar left Old Trafford in 2009 for a then world record fee of £80million and has gone on to win the Champions League and Ballon D'Or award at Real Madrid.
Ronaldo signed a new long-term contract with Real back in September which will keep him at the Bernabeu until 2017.
And Charlton, who is a director at Manchester United, hopes Ronaldo will return to his spiritual home.
"I wonder if ever the day would come when maybe he would come and play for us [Manchester United] again," Charlton told Laureus.
